The 3rd Annual Traditional Medicine Workshop on Rota was a big success compared to last year with 434 total students attending the three-day event held from April 9 to 11.

In collaboration with the Office of Mayor Joseph S. Inos and the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs, the first day of the event saw Rota Mayor Joseph S. Inos emphasize the importance of the herbal plants and process of the herbal medicine in the local culture.

He said the practices are the people’s heritage from “guela’ and guelo’ of long ago.”

The three-day workshop brought together students from different schools and grade levels including the Sinapalo Elementary School, Junior High School, Rota High School, Eskuelan San Francisco de Borja School, and Rota Grace Christian School.

Presentation of different herbal medicines such as amot mahulat, amot pasmu, amot tabatdiyu, amot makpong patgon, amot tanso’, amot pasmon rekla, amot makpong amko’, and da’ok oil were presented by the island’s suruhana Lourdes T. Manglona, Julita A. Calvo, and Carmen M. Toves and suruhanu Timothy M. San Nicolas.

Each presentation was uniquely organized including picture display board, live plants, and demonstration. Tasting of the finished herbal product was also experienced by most participants.

The three-day herbal medicine workshop is one of the activities of DCCA aimed to enhance knowledge, understanding and appreciation of herbal plants and usage in alternative remedy especially to young generation hoping to promote and preserve the cultural heritage.
