‘Saipan continues to be a favorite for US Navy’
The Saipan Chamber of Commerce reported that Saipan continued to be a favorite MWR (Morale, Welfare, and Recreation) destination for U.S. Navy servicemen.
In the Chamber’s April newsletter, Armed Force Committee co-chairs Doug Brennan and Judge David Wiseman said, “Saipan continued to receive recognition form [U.S.] Navy officials as a highly desirable MWR destination for military vessels.
According to the report, Brennan, Wiseman, along with Chamber president James T. Arenovski and its executive director Kyle Calabrese, also met informally with Command Master Chief Vince Vinson of Submarine Squadron 15.
The squadron was on Saipan for a week of R&R and also raved about the island’s potential as an MWR destination.
“The committee is working with MVA (Marianas Visitors Authority), PDI (Pacific Development, Inc.), the [Commonwealth] Ports Authority, and Office of Military and Veterans Affairs, and other relevant government agencies to further streamline and improve the pre-arrival and arrival briefing process,” according to Brennan and Wiseman.
In related news, committee members met with Troops to Teachers’ Gerri Willis and Fred Camacho last month.
In their tete-a-tete with Willis and Camacho, the committee found out that CNMI troops returning home, and their families, are not being provided adequate levels of psychological care often necessary after active duties in war zone.
In response, Brennan and Wiseman have drafted a letter of support for the program that Willis and Camacho will use in their meeting with federal officials in Washington, D.C.
