Shirley’s Coffee Shop had its five starters finishing in double figures in their 92-88 win over GEC Pawnshop in the Inaugural 2008 FMI Inter-Color Basketball League on Thursday at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.

It was a sorry loss for the Pawnbrokers as they led for most of the game before allowing John Santos to take over for the Foodmakers in the final 10 minutes of the match.

Santos, who went scoreless in the second quarter, erupted for 10 points in the fourth period including back-to-back 3-pointers that highlighted Shirley’s comeback from several double-digit spreads.

The win was the second in as many games for the Foodmakers after its opening day 120-112 win over SMF-Seabridge on March 14. They also grabbed the early lead breaking from a four-way logjam with their victims, Advance X-Terminators, and Ol’Aces.

The loss dropped the Pawnbrokers, which scored a 111-76 demolition of MIGS in their March 30 debut, to a tie with TASI Tours Giants from fourth to fifth places with similar 1-1 records.

Santos finished with 29 points, while Elmer Esdrelon added 21 with Steve Rasa ending up with 12 markers. Junar Guiab and Ryan Sanciangco had 10 apiece.

CNMI National player Mark Wallace paced the Pawnbrokers with 22 points, while Emil Olivos and Omar Ajoste chipped in 16 and 12 each.

Bank of Saipan handed the Pawnbrokers a double whammy when it scored a 105-95 triumph in the 40-and-above division.

Martin Moreno overcame a slow start to lead the Bankers’ scoring, finishing with 26 points, while veteran guard Ed Palma contributed 21 markers.

Warren Villegas, Noel Delos Santos, and Sonny Ebuen scored 19, 13, and 11 each.

Manuel Cacho and Sonny Rañiola combined for 27 points in the second half as they tried to rally the Pawnbrokers’ back from several double-digit leads. They both finished with 29 points, while Johnny Badilles and Casabuena netted 11 and 10 markers.
