The general manager of Pacific Development Inc. yesterday said the start of charter flights to Rota will go as scheduled at the end of the month.

Yoichi Matsumura said that PDI, as well as its mother company in Japan, Kinki Nippon Tourist, are hyped up for the start of charter flights to the CNMI’s southernmost island.

“All the three Rota charter flights are full and Japan as well as Rota is very excited to get the ‘maiden’ flight going on April 26,” he said in an e-mail to the Saipan Tribune.

The tourism industry on Rota received a boost in February 2008 when it was announced that KNT said that it would bring in 40 new charter flights to Rota in the next couple of years.

The Rota charter flights are expected to bring in some 8,000 tourists to Rota in about a year. KNT has chartered Continental Airlines to bring in the new Rota flights. Continental Airlines is planning to use its 155-seater Boeing 737 aircraft to service the island.

The inaugural charter flights to Rota arranged by KNT will take place during Japan’s Golden Week, beginning on April 26 and it will run through May 6—daily flights for a total of 10 days.
