The CNMI Emergency Management Office is warning beachgoers to be careful and avoid going into the water, at least until this morning, April 5, due to high surf activity.

The high surf advisory was in affect for the Marianas effective 4pm Friday.

“Northwest swells generated by a storm system east of Japan a few days ago will produce high surf on north facing reefs [Friday night],” EMO said.

The surf is expected to subside below advisory heights Saturday morning.

At this time, expect hazardous surf of 8 to 10 feet on north facing exposures, decreasing to 5 to 7 feet on Saturday, 5am,” EMO said.

EMO is advising the public and beachgoers to avoid venturing near reefs and exposed beaches as wind and wave conditions support dangerous rip currents. Rip currents are life threatening to anyone entering the water. (EMO)
