The Thespians of the Western Pacific Islands handed out awards to 15 CNMI high school students and 10 CNMI middle school students at its annual awards banquet on April 1, 2008. Other students from among the more than three dozen who participated in the year’s competitions attended as well.

This year, in the high school division, Saipan Southern students walked away with the highest total of TWPI awards, while Marianas High School students garnered the most first place awards. In the middle school division, Mount Carmel students won the highest total of TWPI awards, with Cha-Cha Oceanview coming in second.

While most people in the CNMI have heard of NFL, NJFL, and PGFC, the TWPI acronym remains unheralded. This is changing, however, as more and more students from both public and private schools vie for TWPI awards.

TWPI is the honor society for students active in dramatic arts and is organized as a chapter of the International Thespian Society. Officially known as Thespians of the Western Pacific Islands, TWPI has middle and high school students actively participating in productions and competitions.

Both the high school and middle school divisions have yearlong competitions held in conjunction with and supported by The National Forensic League. The competition categories for both junior and senior thespian divisions include monologue, duet acting, solo musical theatre, and mime. The high school (senior thespian) division also has competitions in technical theatre (set design, costume design and film-making) as well.

Top award winners will have the opportunity to compete at the International Thespian Festival in Lincoln, Nebraska, in June 2008. Student members of TWPI have, in the past, performed at the ITS Festival and earned top national honors in competition, scholarships awards, and college admissions.
