Six teams were crowned champions in different age groups in the boys and girls division of the Inaugural 2008 Spring Break Youth Volleyball Festival in Friday’s finals played at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.

Brotherhood and Powerpuffs topped the 18-and-under division, while Umangs won the boys’ Under-12 and -14 age groups with Bwii Bwiis and Hilitai duplicated the feat in the girls’ side.

Brotherhood needed three sets to beat Okies, 25-22, 12-25, 15-11, to win the boys’ 18-and-under title. The win also avenged Brotherhood’s elimination round loss to Okies, 24-26, 17-25.

Brotherhood finished third in the four-day tournament, while the Okies topped the single round-robin eliminations. The Okies beat Ayuyus in the semifinals while Brotherhood ousted the Kings.

The Brotherhood’s Jesus Iguel game-long brilliance and leadership earned him the most valuable player award.

In the girls’ Under-18 class, Powerpuffs completed its one-loss season with an easy 25-15, 25-8 win over Kagman High School.

All-around athlete Lia Rangamar, who is a multi-medaled trackster and an prolific shooter in basketball, led Powerpuffs’ title win and was named MVP.

The Umangs, which is made up Koblerville Elementary School students, of coach Francis Mendiola went 2-for-2 in the boys division winning the Under-14 and -12 titles.

Umangs, which were the top seeds in the four-day tournament entering the finals, scored a hard-earned 21-25, 26-24, 15-12 win over Spicy Tuna thanks to the efforts of Lamarc Iguel and Richard Philip, who were named co-MVPs in the Under-14 division.

Mendiola also used the core of his Under-14 team in the 12-and-under division with Raymund Saralu leading the Umangs in winning against Tokka in the finals.

MVP Love Meeneiser led Hilitai’s 25-21, 25-13 win over UR Mom in the girls’ 14-and-under class, while Marty Ann Mendiola earned the MVP honors after helping Bwii Bwiis beat Mini Marshmellows in the Under-12 division.

The Northern Mariana Islands Volleyball Association organized the tournament in cooperation with the Division of Youth Services and Division of Sports and Recreation.
