Applications open for food safety training
The Food And Drug Administration National Science Teachers Association Food Program is now accepting applications from interested teachers in the CNMI who may want to take advantage of the new understandings in food science and food safety.
CNMI middle and high school science teachers will have the opportunity to provide topically relevant lessons in food science and safety for their students.
The Food Science Professional Development Workshop will be held in Washington, D.C. on July 20-27. Travel, lodging and meal expenses will be provided.
Participants of the workshop are urged to implement the FDA/NSTA curriculum learned during the subsequent school year.
Kagman High School science teacher Robert Church had been the only teacher from the CNMI to have been accepted and had completed the food science curriculum. He is encouraging other science teachers to participate in this event.
Because disease outbreaks caused by food-borne organisms frequent the news, questions such as what measures are being taken by the federal government to prevent transmission of these organisms and what an individual can do to protect themselves from such diseases are frequently asked.
The science and technology of food production, transportation, storage and preparation has changed to meet the need for safe food products.
According to the FDA/NSTA “new research methodologies have enabled scientists to broaden their understanding of food science.”
The FDA/NSTA Professional Development Program in Food Science is supported by the FDA and implemented by the Graduate School, USDA.
Deadlines for application is April 23, 2008 and can be found at www.nsta.org/pd/fda.aspx/.
