Most of CK, Susupe now have 24-hour water
Nearly all water customers of the Commonwealth Utilities Corp. in Chalan Kanoa and Susupe villages now enjoy 24-hour water, according to the latest update from the CNMI Water Task Force.
Task force chair Lt. Gov. Timothy P. Villagomez said yesterday that about 90 about percent of water customers in the two villages now have 24-hour water supply.
By June it is expected 100 percent of both villages will enjoy 24-hour water, he said.
This accomplishment has been a joint effort of the Water Task Force, the Office of Insular Affairs, and the CUC Water Division with funding from OIA.
A task force statement issued yesterday said that residents in the two areas have been quick to compliment the HD Supply contractor’s team working in the field and have expressed their gratitude to both the Water Task Force and the CUC Water Division staff.
“For the first time many residents are able to enjoy the luxury of a 24-hour water supply without worrying about rationing,” the statement said.
CUC reports seeing residents washing cars, watering lawns and washing off carports.
As the dry season is rapidly approaching, CUC cautions the residents of these villages that the supply to the Isley Reservoir, which provides the storage for serving the villages, is limited.
“The message is please enjoy, but practice conservation. The daily high pressure has caused some service lines to fail and residents report leaking faucets, toilets and hose bibs. Fixing the leaks, installing low flow toilets, and faucets will go a long way to conserve the water. Remember, the water you save today is the water you use tomorrow,” CUC said.
Some suggestions are to wash cars once weekly, only water necessary plants, place food coloring in the toilet water tank and see if any coloring leaks into the bowl. If color is detected, replace the seal and the flapper. Replace leaking faucets and remember not to leave hoses unattended.
Once the water meters are completely installed and are being read, villagers will want to conserve water to keep lower monthly bills. At this time most are still on the monthly flat rate charge. (CUC)
