NMA names 10 as ’07 top athletes

Northern Marianas Athletics named 10 athletes that excelled in the chosen events of their respective age divisions in the 2007 Athletes of the Year banquet held last Wednesday at the pavilion across the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.

Leading the list of winners were Male and Female Open awardees Tyrone Omar and Yvonne Bennett with Boys and Girls Athletes of the Year Nate Mateo and Jacque Wonberg joining them.

Boys’ and Girls’ 10-and-under Athletes of the Year Jordan Manglona and Gabrielle Race leads a cast of winners that are considered to be the future of the CNMI athletic program.

Joining Manglona and Race are Angelo Jones and Ashley Babauta (12-and-under); J.R. Concepcion, and co-athletes Reylynn Sapong and Lia Rangamar (14-and-under).

The other nominees were Taylor Knecht, Michaella Grandinetti, and Emily Jones (girls); Jordan Butcher, Danny Auther, and Kenyan Schultz (boys) in the 10-and-under. Rachel Abraham and Jellian Majors (girls); Crosby Schultz, Brandon Philips, David Ramon, Michael Mancao, and Byron Ryan (boys) in the 12-and-under; Madison Schultz and Chiang Duenas (girls), and Mike Bondoc (boys) in the 14-and-under; Champ Untalan, Matt Mancao, and Jesus Iguel (boys 18-and-under); and Nick Gross and Dexter Dillay (men’s open).

Mamiko Oshima, meanwhile, bested Mieko Carey, Noriko Jim, and Akiko Hagiwara for the roadrunner of the year crown.
