The Department of Community and Cultural Affairs says that the youth are not community problems, but community assets and resources.

DCCA acting Secretary Melvin Faisao addressed the youth during their two-day Teen Talk Youth Summit last week, where he stressed that through empowerment “youths are afforded with opportunities to develop the competencies they need to become successful contributors of their communities.”

“Youth empowerment and development are an ongoing process of human growth and development; it is a framework for youth that focuses in their capacities, strengths and developmental needs,” Faisao said.

Students from ChaCha Ocean View Jr. High School, Hopwood Jr. High, Northern Marianas Academy, Grace Christian Academy, Seventh Day Adventist School, Kagman High School, Saipan Southern High School, Marianas High School, and Tinian Jr. & Sr. High School took part in the first Teen Talk Youth Summit held Wednesday and Thursday.

The purpose of the summit was to develop important life skills, address teen issues, and to build upon teen leadership and empowerment.

Faisao said that the department is committed to helping the Commonwealth’s children realize their full potential by expanding opportunities in mentorship programs.

“I strongly believe that by encouraging mentorship programs, we are doing our part to see that more of the Commonwealth’s children grow up into strong, confident, and successful adults,” Faisao said.

The two-day event was hosted by the CNMI Public School System and Division of Youth Services.
