Department of Public Safety acting Commissioner Claudio K. Norita has directed the Boating Safety Unit to dispatch its patrol boat for the safety of fishermen and beachgoers on weekends, particularly today’s Black Saturday and tomorrow’s Easter Sunday.

With lots of picnics at CNMI beaches expected during Black Saturday and Easter Sunday, Norita also advised families to designate a “sober observer” to watch their children who are in the water.

With respect to boating safety measures, Norita said it was his policy before he left DPS that patrol boats go out into the water to conduct marine enforcement during weekends.

“So the patrol boat has to get out. And again we are going to reinstate that. The patrol boat has to get out because on Saturdays and Sundays, fishermen go out, boaters go out, they go to Managaha,” he said.

Boating Safety Unit officers, the commissioner stressed, need to go out and enforce the safety issues that are required of any boater.

Norita said traffic and patrol officers may also conduct patrols at beaches.

To avoid drowning incidents, Norita said, “We need to designate a sober observer to be out there and look out for the kids that are in the water. Because two seconds or one minute can make a lot of difference in a little child.”
