The high schools of Kagman and Marianas aim to increase their respective leads when the weekly High School Outrigger Canoe races returns tomorrow at Kilili Beach Park.

The high school canoe season started last month and Saturday’s races will begin at 9am.

The Kagman Ayuyus and the Lady Dolphins of MHS currently lead the four-team field, each garnering 32 and 38 points after the 500m and 1,500m short distance and long distance events.

Kagman holds a 10-point lead over closest pursuer MHS’ 22 markers, while the Saipan Southern Manta Rays and the Mt. Carmel School Knights collected 19 and 15 points.

SSHS improved its standings after earning 10 points for winning last week’s long distance race with a time of 43 minutes and 20 seconds. Mt Carmel was 26 seconds behind (43:56) for an additional six points.

Kagman (44:48) and MHS (45:15) placed third and fourth to collect four and two points apiece.

In the girls division, MHS now has a 12-point lead after topping last week’s long distance race with a time of 51:52, while Mt. Carmel, which is also second in the overall points race with 26, came in second (52:10).

KHS earned four points for placing third (53:07), while SSHS had two after finishing fourth (53:11).

MHS now has a total of 38 points followed by MCS’ 26, while KHS has 12 and SSHS nine.

Organizers are looking for individuals who will help them hold the race. They will need volunteers to assist the participants, prepare the canoes and other equipment, race marshals, and timekeepers.

They are also looking for people who have stop or digital watches to monitor the times of each school.
