The CNMI Aeronautics Team—a team of public school students—made it to second place of the national Real World Design Challenge in Washington, D.C., with a team from Connecticut taking first place.

In the national finals, the CNMI team was one of the Top 2 finalists, competing against Connecticut for the challenge to design an agricultural drone for detecting pests and spraying pesticides.

The team was also competing against two teams from mainland China for the international category.

The CNMI Aeronautics Team—made up of students of Marianas High School—won the regional title last January that led them to represent the entire Pacific region at the contest in Washington, D.C.

As of press time, the final competition in the international categories was still taking place.

The students are Mimi Sakano, Ian Cataluna, Gaeun Yang, Chenoa Bunts-Anderson, and Daniel Villarmero.

This is an international competition that requires students to design and model drones to solve economic and social crises in the world. The 2018 challenge involved designing an agricultural drone for detecting pests and spraying pesticides. Teams must all design a complete business case, mission plans, and write a 80 page notebook.

There were a total of 13 states and five teams from China that competed. (PSS)
