Adopt a pet and plant a tree
YIGO, Guam—Like many areas around the island, the GAIN animal shelter property in Yigo suffers from soil loss and erosion. This has caused the property to develop a slope that encourages soil runoff, exposes the dog kennel foundations, and causes puddling water.
“We have lost a lot of soil over the past several years and you can really see the effects if you look at old photos of the shelter,” says GAIN executive director Ali Hadley. “We worry it will soon start to damage the dog kennels and even our buildings.”
In an effort to help the non-profit and only animal shelter on island, the Guam Bureau of Statistics and Planning and Guam Department of Forestry collaborated with Guam Animals in Need last Saturday to plant 80-100 trees around the shelter property.
“We are extremely grateful that BSP and Forestry are helping us with this while also making it a community event. It’s an excellent opportunity for the public to do something great for the environment and the shelter, as well as visit some of our adoptable animals. It’s a win-win,” said Hadley in an earlier statement.
The event ran from 8:30am to 10:30am at the GAIN animal shelter in Yigo. (PR)
