Abuy, De Guzman win MVP awards

MDX/Armatech’s James Abuy and DYS/Bayani’s Jaymark De Guzman took the coveted most valuable player awards in the recently concluded 2012 United Filipino Basketball League.

Abuy claimed the MVP honors in the Masters Budweiser Cup, while De Guzman won the same award in the U20 division of the Docomo Pacific Cup, as both outstanding players had key roles in the successes of their respective teams.

The MDX shooter scored 11 points in their 78-62 title win over Bayani/LBT Appraisal last Sunday at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium, firing 7 straight points in the fourth quarter to lead the back-to-back championships breakaway. Abuy was also among the double-figure scorers for MDX in the regular season, which the two-time champion swept.

Besides winning the MVP award in the masters division, Pacific Islands Club employee also made it to the Mythical Five Selection, joining teammates Bruce Berline and Ferdie Tobias, Laguna/Twinkle/Erika’s Sonny Ebuen, and Bayani/LBT’s Alex Ocampo.

Other individual awardees in the masters division were scoring champion Bobby Geli of VisMinda/Civic Boys and best coach Peter Crisostomo of MDX. Geli’s team also took the sportsmanship trophy.

Meanwhile, De Guzman earned the MVP award after powering DYS/Bayani to a come-from-behind 74-69 victory in the finals against MDX/Mariana Resort.

DYS/Bayani was down by five, 64-69, going into the last 1:54 of the match, when De Guzman teamed up with Jimmy Tudela in a 10-0 windup to grab the championship from MDX. The lefty De Guzman scored MDX’s last 5 points, including two crucial free throws, and also kept DYS afloat early in the fourth period when MDX was trying to take momentum of the match, as he hit two triples. The DYS wingman fired 16 of their 26 markers in the fourth period of the winner-take-all finals.

De Guzman, who helped DYS sweep the round-robin regular season, was also part of the Mythical Five, joining SIP/Barney’s Eric Dela Rosa and John Darag, and MDX’s Eugene Manglona and Kevin De Leon.

AON/Boholano’s top-scorer John John Capuyon Jr. missed the Mythical Team, but won the scoring title, while DYS’ Omar Ajoste was named best coach. AON also took the sportsmanship award and the third place trophy, while DYS was handed the pennant after posting a 5-0 record in the regular season.
