Abrams makes 200m finals

CNMI sprinter Rachel Abrams advanced to the finals of the 200m run in the 2011 Pacific Games after placing second in her heat yesterday at the Stade Numa Daly in Noumea.
Abrams timed in at 27.46 seconds to earn one of the two qualifying slots on Heat 3. Papua New Guinea’s Venessa Waro took the other finals berth after clocking in at 26.06 seconds.
“Wow. That’s awesome. It’s history for us, as we never made it to the finals of the Pacific Games before,” Northern Marianas Athletics head coach Elias Rangamar said in a telephone interview yesterday after hearing the good news.
“The NMA family wishes Rachel all the best in the finals. We’re excited for her,” Rangamar added.
Abrams will race in the 200m run finals today at 5:20pm (4:20 Saipan time) against PNG’s Waro, Helen Philemon (25.95 seconds), and Toea Wisil (25.12 seconds), Fiji’s Paulini Korowaqa (25.33 seconds), Sisilia Seavula (26.00), and Danielle Ala Kija (26.27 seconds), and Vanuatu’s Daphne Nalawas (26.47 seconds).
In the qualifying heat, Abrams defeated Vanuatu’s Susan Tama (27.52 seconds), New Caledonia’s Chloe Thavel (27.74 seconds), and Nauru’s Myshine Raidinen (29.72 seconds).
Trevor Ogumoro also competed in athletics yesterday and submitted 5.90m in the long jump for 11th place.
In beach volleyball, the CNMI’s Tyce Mister and Chris Nelson absorbed their second straight setback after losing to brothers Dino and Vatea Tauraa of Tahiti, 11-21, 13-21. The Commonwealth pair won its first game over Palau last Monday before bowing to American Samoa last Tuesday. With their back-to-back losses, Nelson and Mister are out of the medal hunt.
New Caledonia sits comfortable on top of the medal board with only three days left in the competition. The host has an 86-72-35 gold-silver-bronze tally as of 8pm last night. Tahiti and Fiji are in second and third, respectively.
