Teen allegedly tries to kill man with a sledgehammer
A teenager who claimed to have heard “voices” in the house allegedly attempted to kill the husband of his aunt by hitting him with a sledgehammer on the head at their residence in Koblerville Tuesday afternoon.
Kamealoha Leonard Oei, 19, was arrested on Wednesday morning in Chalan Kanoa. He was detained for attempted murder, aggravated assault and battery, assault with a dangerous weapon, and disturbing the peace.
The victim, Francis Edyn, suffered injuries to the head and a broken jaw bone, police said.
During a hearing yesterday, Superior Court associate judge Kenneth Govendo imposed a $100,000 cash bail for Oei’s temporary liberty.
Govendo set the preliminary hearing for Dec. 20 at 9am.
Police investigation showed that while Edyn was sleeping in the bedroom of their house, Oei, who was carrying a sledgehammer, entered the room.
Edyn’s wife, who was outside the bedroom, heard a banging sound and later saw Oei running out from the room.
When she checked on her husband, he was in the bedroom complaining of pain in the head. He then he vomited. The wife took the victim to the Commonwealth Health Center.
The wife told police that Oei would keep with him the sledgehammer and knives, and that he would sometimes talk to the ceiling.
The suspect also stated he has been hearing voices inside the house, she said. (Ferdie de la Torre)
