Matthew De Leon Guerrero, a senior from Mount Carmel High School and the newly elected Speaker of the 9th CNMI Youth Congress, was in Washington, D.C. to participate in the National Youth Leadership Forum on Law. The conference was held Nov. 14-18.

De Leon Guerrero said the six-day conference was worthwhile. “The highlights and benefits of the [NYLF] on Law was that it gave me a chance to visit and experience the American Judicial system up-close in our nation’s capital and also participated in mock trial and supreme court exercises with fellow students from across the country.”

The National Youth Leadership Forum on Law introduces high school students from across the country to careers in the legal field. The one-week program allows students the opportunity to meet and interact with nationally-recognized professionals from some of the nation’s top law firms. Students attending the conference also had the opportunity to test the fundamentals of law through simulation and engage in debate over several legal issues facing our country today.

De Leon Guerrero and fellow students from across the country also had the time to visit several law colleges around the Washington, D.C. area, as well as getting the rare opportunity to meet with U.S. Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito.

“I congratulate Matthew De Leon Guerrero for his new duty as newly elected Speaker of the 9th CNMI Youth Congress, and also to commend him for continuing his educational interests and goals in the field of Law by participating in the National Youth Leadership Forum,” said Resident Rep. Pete A. Tenorio. “I urge Matthew to share his valuable experience with NYLF with others, to encourage his colleagues to participate in this worthwhile educational forum in the future.”

Following high school graduation, De Leon Guerrero will head to the U.S. mainland and finish his bachelor’s degree before deciding on a post-graduate field.

De Leon Guerrero is the son of Edward C. De Leon Guerrero and Eve O. De Leon Guerrero of Koblerville, Saipan. He is the youngest of two other siblings. (PR)
