U.S. Interior Secretary Dick Kempthorne may visit the Northern Marianas early next year, acting Gov. Timothy P. Villagomez reported.

Villagomez had a chance to meet with Kempthorne and other leaders of U.S. insular areas at the U.S. Interior Department’s Island Business Opportunities Conference in Honolulu, Hawaii last week.

“I met with him on three occasions. He’s very familiar with our issues and he reiterated his commitment to promoting the interests of the islands. In fact, he’s planning to come to visit early next year,” Villagomez said.

He also reported that he had an opportunity to discuss with Kempthorne the current situation of the garment industry, as well as the CNMI’s proposed amendment to Headnote 3(a). The Cabinet official asked Cohen to provide him with more information about the proposal and its proponents and critics, the acting governor said.

Other concerns Villagomez raised during his meetings with Kempthorne were the CNMI’s request for financial assistance from the federal government, and airline industry issues.
