Pirates sink Tanapag, 12-2
The defending champion Pirates finally notched their second win of the season Monday night when they trounced the Tanapag No Zone, 12-2, under the lights at Francisco M. Palacios Baseball Field.
Craig Sanchez’s crew seized control of the game during a seven-run third inning and never looked back as they forced umpires to invoke the Saipan Major League Fall mercy rule in the seventh.
Josh Dela Cruz went the distance for the Pirates on the hill giving up a pair of runs off of five hits and fanning three through seven. The most hits he gave up in one inning came in the fifth when Dela Cruz surrendered two singles.
Second baseman Jonathan Salas led the Pirates at the plate with a standout 4-for-5 performance that produced three base hits, a double, and a run batted in. Salas also stole a pair of bases for the Pirates, but he wasn’t the only one making things happen with the swat stick as catcher Ray Dela Cruz went 2-for-3 with two base knocks and right fielder Mike Taitano drove in two runs in the top of the third inning to finish 1-for-3.
The Pirates broke open a scoreless tie with a seven-run seven-hit third and added two tallies in the top of the fourth before Tanapag answered with a run in the bottom of the inning to cut their deficit to 7-1.
The teams traded runs in the fifth inning but the Pirates were the only hitters that managed to score the rest of the way with another pair of run in the top of the sixth to take a 10-run lead.
The action continues tonight when the Manhoben Young Guns challenges the Hustlers at Tan Ko Field at 6:30. As always, the public is invited to attend the contest free of charge.
