HAGATNA, Guam—Tango Theatres, an affiliate of Tan Holdings, celebrated the grand opening of its new 5-plex Agana Center Stadium Theatres last Friday in Hagatna, Guam. The theatre is the second location for the company, joining the 12-plex Micronesian Mall Theatre, which was opened in 1998.

Attending the ribbon-cutting celebration on Friday was Guam Gov. Felix Camacho, who thanked the company for its continued investments in Guam, including over $2 million in the new theatre. The governor was joined by other dignitaries including first lady Joanne Camacho, Lt. Gov. Kaleo Moylan, Agana Shopping Center owner Henry Sy, Shopping Center general manager Therese Kamm, Tango vice president Art Gordon, Tan Holdings CEO Willie Tan, president Jerry Tan and many other local dignitaries.

“We started Tango Theatres in 1998 as we saw an opportunity to serve the island of Guam with family entertainment. Now we are very pleased to be able to serve the central and southern communities so they don’t need to drive so far to enjoy good movies,” said Jerry Tan in his keynote speech. “I want to acknowledge the Sy family for their investment of over $20 million in this shopping center and also to the local government for their pro-business attitude, which gives us confidence to invest further in this community.”

Also celebrating a grand opening last week was the new ShoeMart at the Agana Shopping Center, which first began renovations in December 2003.

“We think the community will find the Agana Shopping Center a place where people can meet their friends and have family gatherings. Our tenants and customers have been looking forward to this theatre opening. We certainly wish Tango success,” said Therese Kamm.

Tango’s Art Gordon has opened over 200 theatres during his career. “The first thing you do in any business is look for a good location. It is remarkable what Henry Sy and his team have done with this shopping center,” said Gordon in his remarks at the grand opening. “I remember the old days of the Agana Shopping Center and I have never seen a parking lot as full as this. When we talk about the revitalization of Hagatna—this is the tip of the spear.”

Representing the Guam Legislature at the event was Sen. Frank Aguon, who thanked the company for “believing in the community of Guam” in presenting a resolution to Tan Holdings and Tango Theatres in recognition for the company’s investment.

Construction began on the new Tango Theatres at the Agana Shopping center in November 2005. Tango Theatres worked with the United Cinema Services and their professional team of designers and resource people to bring the best in what movies are all about: seats, curtains, lights, safety equipment, screens and state of the art projection. Movies are shipped directly from studio distribution centers in Los Angeles by couriers that include FedEx, UPS, and DHL.

Following the ribbon-cutting last Friday, guests were treated to a buffet lunch, a movie and a tour of the theatres, which feature the latest projection and sound equipment and true stadium style seating in all auditoriums. Strong projection equipment presents the clearest, sharpest images on screens, exactly proportional to auditorium size. Guests are seated in ultra comfortable high back seats designed by Camatica, and enjoy the best of all major contemporary digital and stereo sound formats such as Dolby and DTs. (PR)
