Fitial’s 2nd surgery set for Dec. 4
Gov. Benigno R. Fitial may not be back in the Commonwealth until January, as he needs at least another month of recovery period after his next surgery, acting Gov. Timothy P. Villagomez said yesterday.
Villagomez reported that Fitial will have his back operation done on Dec. 4, 2006. Recovery is expected to take four to six weeks.
ÅgOur prayers are with him, as he undergoes his back surgery,Åh Villagomez said. ÅgHe cannot return to work just yet, but he is upbeat. He calls every single day to check how things are going in the Commonwealth.Åh
Fitial is currently recovering from a neck surgery, which was performed on Oct. 31, 2006, to correct his spinal stenosis, a narrowing of the spinal canal that places pressure on the spinal cord. The upcoming surgery will address a similar medical condition affecting his lower back.
The procedure will be performed by a surgical team at the UCLA Medical Center. Heading the team is Dr. Jeffrey Wang, chief of the UCLA Comprehensive Spine Center whose specialty covers cervical spine, lumbar spine, and degenerative disorders. Wang’s research areas include novel gene therapy and minimally invasive techniques for spinal surgery.
