Last week’s investment conference in Hawaii provided the Commonwealth with invaluable opportunity not only to market the islands to U.S. investors, but also to bring CNMI issues to the attention of key officials of the Bush administration, according to press secretary Charles P. Reyes Jr.

He reported that Lt. Gov. Timothy P. Villagomez met at least twice with Interior Secretary Dick Kempthorne and personally informed the U.S. Cabinet member of current economic issues in the Commonwealth.

“That in itself is worth the cost of the trip to Hawaii. You rarely get a chance to meet with such a high-ranking member of the Cabinet,” said Reyes.

He also said that the CNMI delegation learned a lot about investment incentives being offered by other U.S.-affiliated insular areas.

“By attending this conference, we had an opportunity to learn what others are doing to attract investments and see what we can adopt,” he said.

But most importantly, he added, the investment conference provided the CNMI government and businesses a venue for networking with potential investors from the mainland United States and other governments in the Pacific.

The Island Business Opportunities Conference was held on Nov. 13-14, 2006 at the Waikiki Marriott in Honolulu, Hawaii.
