For the second straight day, Southern Sonics blew away their opponent by more than 100 points in the 2nd Annual DFS-Northern Youth Basketball Association Invitational.

The team showed no mercy by limiting Tinian II to a mere two points in the first half en route to a 116-12 massacre in Division 2 yesterday at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.

The Sonics started strong behind the great guns of Leo Galarse and Ray Santos. The duo combined for 21 of the team’s 60 points as Sonics seemed out to once again prove their mettle in the weeklong tournament.

But what was more impressive was the team’s defense, as the Sonics stuck to their man like glue and many times prevented the ball from even crossing half court—leading to more than a dozen turnovers on the part of the Tinian players.

When Tinian did manage to bring the ball within scoring range, the Sonics’ ever-active hands this time disrupted shots—either by blocking them or by just altering the shot, which more often than not led to easy fastbreak points on the other side.

After the first 20 minutes of play, Sonics were on top by a whopping 58 points against the obviously outmatched players from the south.

Galarse, it turned out, was just getting started, as the unstoppable force again went to town in the second half of the ballgame, accounting for 21 more to finish as the game’s high scorer with 32 points.

To Tinian’s credit, they managed to multiply their first-half total five fold in the second half, but that wasn’t even enough to cover Sonics’ production in the first four minutes of the contest, as the team went on to crown their victims with the 104-point shellacking.

Galarse was backed up by the 12 points of Lawrence Echon, Anthony Rogolifoi, Oscar Masga, and Santos. Tinian II was paced by Ian Pascua and Nick Ayuyu, who logged in four points apiece.

Five games were concluded Sunday with Tinian Girls routing Hopwood Girls, 31-21; Sonics taking out G-Rollers II, 124-16, in Division 2; G-Rollers getting the better of SIS, 43-22, in Division I; Sixers defeating Tinian I, 71-66, in Division 2, and Toyota G-Rollers I escaping Navy Hill Ballers, 57-52, to give it the lead in Division 3 at 2-0.

Saturday’s results, meanwhile, saw Toyota G-Rollers slip by Tinian II, 55-49, in Division 3; G-Sparks steamroll past Matansa Sparks, 59-39, in Division 3; G-Rollers II nip Tinian II, 32-32, in Division 2; and G-Rollers run over Tinian I, 45-20, in Division 2.
