Swimmers seeing green in Marpi
Only two weeks remain before the local tankers traded their fins and kickboards for woods and irons as the Saipan Swim Club hosts all comers during the first SSC Jingle Bell Golf Tournament.
According to SSC head coach Michael Stewart, the club is continuing its fund raising efforts by hosting its first ever golf tournament on Saturday, Dec. 2, at the Marianas Country Club.
The proceeds will directly benefit the organization that routinely sends some of Saipan’s finest athletes overseas as aquatic ambassadors and brings home the most medals during both regional and international competitions.
The top finishers will walk away with trophies and smiles for recording the lowest scores as well as fat wallets in their pockets and purses as $500 goes to first place, $300 to second place, and $100 for third.
Trophies and prizes will also be awarded to both the men’s and women’s Low Gross finishers as tournament organizers are offering a double Peoria scoring system where undisclosed six holes will determine each player’s handicap
The cost to participate in the tournament is $85 and includes a day on the links, an assortment of mini-games, lunch, refreshments, and awards banquet. Among the mini-games are putting, long drive, and closest to the pin contests.
Stewart enlisted the aid of hometown tournament organizers to help with the preparations as Jeff Taylor, Ben Babauta, and Ron Hodges will be running the show on the Marpi course next month.
“They put on the Tournament of Champions so I’m sure they’ll do a good job for us,” he said.
Currently there is no penalty for late registration but the tournament’s official show time is 6am and the shotgun start fires promptly an hour later at 7am. To register for the tournament, contact Stewart by calling 287-9474 or via email at wfla@hotmail.com, or by calling Babauta at 236-2563 or 483-2563.
