All about PXC, Eagles, junior netters, Johnson

The second PXC Preba Hao was another successful show in the books, the Grace Christian Academy Eagles made history, Ed Johnson returned with a silver medal, and a bunch of junior netters were successful to headline the week in sports.

PXC Preba Hao was a big hit last Saturday at the Saipan World Resort Royal Taga Hall as a jam-packed crowd witnessed mix martial arts at its best.

Charleston Aiken and Manny Laniyo of Gracie Barra were successful in the four-man battles, with Aiken defeating Kelvin “The Big Hit” Fitial of CHOKECHAIN in the heavyweight finals via unanimous decision, and Laniyo defeating CHOKECHAIN’s Leroy Sablan in the lightweight finals.

Aiken defeated Juan Iguel of TK9 to advance to the finals, while Fitial stopped “Kill” Bill Saures of Dragon Tribe. For his part, Laniyo won via technical knockout over Steve Suzuki, while Sablan submitted Shabb Sablan.

Other winners include Giovanni Sablan and Bernie “The Shadow of Death” Neth of Trench Tech Purebred Saipan, Anthony Robert, Myron San Nicolas, Syl Teregeyo, and Jay Tilipao of CHOKECHAIN, and Dragon Tribe’s Joel Pangelinan.

Meanwhile, the Eagles survived a scare from Saipan International School but had what it took to became the varsity champions of the Private Schools Indoor Volleyball League.

The team rallied from an early deficit to take the first set by a comfortable 10-point margin, 25-15, but the tables were turned in the second as the Geckos turned up the offense for a 25-11 win, but the Eagles regrouped to win, 15-8, in the decisive third set.

Third place went to the Mount Carmel School Knights after the team defeated the Marianas Baptist Academy Stormz in straight sets, 25-13 and 25-23.

Ed Johnson, meanwhile, brought home a silver medal from the 2006 Pan Pacific Masters Game in Gold Coast, Australia. The veteran of many sports competed as a guard for the Guam Masters Basketball delegation, seeing action in the 65-and-over and 45-and-over competitions. His silver medal was won in the 65-and-over division.

Also successful were a bunch of junior netters that reign supreme in the 2006 Fall Classic organized by the Northern Mariana Islands Tennis Association.

Title winners include boys’ 18-and-under champion Ji Hoon Heo, boys’ 13-and-under winner James Camacho, boys’ 9-and-under division champion Quintin Ramsey, girls’ 13-and-under champion Thea Minor, and girls’ 9-and-under category champion Neghar Rastguiy.

Action also continued in the 8th Annual Miller Lite Four-Person Co-ed Beach Volleyball League and the World Organized Rocball Community League, while organizers were busy prepping for the 2nd Annual DFS NYBA Invitational.
