Ex-CNTA official honored
The former chairman of the China National Tourism Administration, He Guang Wei, was honored by the CNMI government and Marianas Visitors Authority in a dinner held at Fiesta Resort and Spa Saipan on Oct. 30.
In his opening remarks, acting Gov. Timothy Villagomez called Wei a “great friend of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.”
Wei was instrumental in first opening the doors of the CNMI to Chinese tourism. In his former role as CNTA chairman, he worked diligently to help the CNMI gain its Approved Destination Status. This status made it possible for Chinese citizens to visit the islands. Today, the CNMI is seeing visitors from Shanghai and Guangzhou. Without the help of Wei, this would not have been possible.
“Tonight we look to not only what has already been achieved, but to the responsibilities that still lie ahead for the Northern Marianas,” said Villagomez. “The Northern Marianas government has recently adopted a five-year strategic tourism plan that will develop our Chinese market. In addition to more promotions, we have planned developments that must be made to provide a premier and unforgettable visit for our visitors from China. We understand that Chinese tourists have the highest expectations for accommodations, leisure activities, service and environmental quality. Mr. Chairman, we will work to meet and exceed those expectations.”
Wei recommended that Gov. Benigno R. Fitial and Villagomez, along with representatives of MVA, visit China to continue to strengthen the ties that are in place.
“There is a slogan at the Marianas Visitors Authority. I hope it translates well. It says, ‘My Marianas is Your Marianas.’ Mr. Chairman, please know that for your dedication to us, this is also, in part, your Marianas. From our people, thank you for all your support,” said Villagomez. (PR)
