Two still perfect at PIC
After waiting more than a week to resume their round of regular season play, the Yellow Division returned to the Pacific Islands Club for a little hand-to-hand in the sand as We’re All Going Streaking and Pulullun Part II remained perfect in the 8th Annual Miller Lite Coed Four-Person Volleyball League.
A little bit of rain did little to dampen the spirits and the weather held for the most part as two of the league’s top teams emerged with victories in San Antonio. Dale “Dread Pirate” Roberts and We’re All Going Streaking dispatched Fotten Gaga to extend their undefeated streak to five games, but they lost their first set of the season in the process.
After taking the opening set, 11-4, Roberts’ crew fell to “Tricky” Nick Castro’s Fotten Gaga gang, 11-9, in one of the most exciting sets of the night. Jon Cramer was in top form at the net, but his precision passing was not enough to overcome Roberts, Hank Magofña, Chad Capps, and Amanda “In Your Face” Puleo in the third.
The clincher was more competitive than the 11-5 score would suggest as Fotten Gaga tried to knock off We’re All Going Streaking for the first time in the preliminary round.
Pulullun Part II also improved to 5-0 as captain Michael “The Aussie” Ray, Apple “Ringo” Samson, Ken Tanzawa, Kimiko Hasegawa, and Su Jung Lee swept SaipanCell in the finals game of the night.
After winning the first two sets by a combined score of 22-3, Pulullun Part II fell asleep and let James Lee’s champions of communication rocket out to a 7-2 lead. Ray’s contenders were on the ropes several times as SaipanCell held game points for four serves, but Pulullun Part II eked out a narrow 12-10 win to take all three sets.
The Saipan International School Geckos capitalized on Fotten Gaga’s loss and climbed into the playoff race by defeating Dolphins-Not Ashamed in straight sets to improve to 3-2 on the season.
After taking the closely contested first set, 11-7, the Geckos unleashed an offensive onslaught to complete the sweep with an impressive 11-1 and 11-0 run to close out their match.
The Marianas High School students were victimized once again as E.J. Lee’s Battered Fish Sticks held on to their playoff slot by taking two of three from Dolphins-Blue Shiner to start the night.
Lee’s team took the first set by storm, 11-1, but the remaining sets didn’t come easy as the Dolphins evened the set count at one apiece with a spirited 11-9 rally in the second. Rather than allow the students to taste victory for the second time this season. Battered Fish Sticks prevailed in the rubber match with an 11-8 win.
The action continues tonight as Dolphins-Not Ashamed returns to the courts at 5:30pm to face first place We’re All Going Streaking followed by the battle of 3-2 records between Saipan International School and Battered Fish Sticks at 6:30pm.
SaipanCell looks for its first win of the season at 7:30pm against Dolphins-Blue Shiner and Pulullun Part II tries to extend its unbeaten streak to 6-0 against Fotten Gaga in the 8:30pm finale.
