A tourist was robbed by a “young male” at the Grotto dive spot in Marpi Saturday night.

Department of Public Safety acting spokesman Sgt. Thomas A. Blas Jr. said Aya Kikuta, 27, lost her Kiva bag, digital camera, wallet, watch, credit card, and some Japanese yen.

Blas said that DPS received a report about the robbery on Saturday at 6:46pm.

Preliminary investigation showed that Kikuta and several of her friends went to the Grotto at 5:30pm and went down the stairs to swim.

Kikuta left her bag on the rocks and when she got out to get her camera, an unidentified male person grabbed her bag from her hand and ran up the stairs.

The victim tried to call the police on her cell phone, but there was no available service at that time in the area.

The group went back to the Marianas Resort where they contacted the police.

The tourist described the suspect as a young male with shoulder length hair, skinny, dark-skinned, and was wearing a white shirt.

Blas appealed to anyone who has information about the incident to call the DPS Criminal Investigation Bureau at 664-9045 or the Crime Stoppers Hotline at 234-7272.

Burglars and robbers have been very active in the past few months victimizing tourists and joggers in Marpi.

Robbers also recently struck in other villages.

On Oct. 24, a woman driving a scooter was robbed by an unidentified man near William S. Reyes Elementary School in Chalan Kanoa. The victim, a 34-year-old Chinese, lost her purse containing a cell phone, cash, and other personal items.

A week before the Chalan Kanoa robbery, an unidentified man robbed a Chinese woman who was walking along Beach Road in Garapan. The victim lost her purse containing $120 cash, driver’s license, and other personal documents.
