More than a dozen squads of free swingers signed up for the Men’s Inter-Government Slow-Pitch Softball League and organizers are excited to see such a big turnout from the home of Marianas mountain ball.

According to league coordinator John Reyes, the season will take a little longer than he originally planned because the government agencies registered in force when the call for team went out last month.

“It’s going to be between three to four months if the weather permits. We had 16 teams sign up and that’s a lot. It’s a lot of teams and will take longer than expected but it will be fine,” he said.

Half of the teams will qualify for post-season play but not all of the eight playoff squads will have something to celebrate as those who take the final positions will face stiff competition.

“Finishing in seventh or eighth place will be tough because No Zone and DCCA will probably be in the top slots,” said Reyes.

DCCA took the title last year and according to Reyes they are bringing the same power packed line-up to Miguel “Tan Ge” Basa Softball Field this time around with a few additions as well.

“This year DCCA has a very strong team. We have [a strong] infield, outfield, pitching, catching—it’s a full squad. They’re all DCCA players from the past two years but we got some new players who did have a team so we recruited them in,” he said

While he remains confident in his team, Reyes said that it would foolish to be overconfident as the league will see a culmination of strong squads at the Oleai Sports Complex.

“Don’t rule out the rest of the teams because they combined and they’re going to have strong teams too,” he said.
