Swimmers go Belgian in Marpi

The Saipan Swim Club has sent its finely tuned athletes into international competition countless times during the course of the past three decades, but they brought a little foreign flavor to Friday morning’s predawn practice in Marpi when their coach broke out his Belgian waffle maker.

SSC head coach Michael Stewart has preached proper methods, proper diets, and worked his swimmers in the Kan Pacific Swimming Pool for the past couple of years to help them become some of Micronesia’s best.

He let up just a little bit last week when he offered his top-notch tankers and masters program swimmers a homemade breakfast after chasing the black line at the bottom of the pool during training.

Parents didn’t miss out on the opportunity to enjoy coffee, tea, and early morning refreshments either, as they took orders and served the swimmers after a job well done in the chlorine sea.

Practice is usually a serious thing, and the kids spend their time in caps and goggles to make friends and waves, but the only fluid that made them smile on Friday was the Maple Syrup that saturated every nook and cranny on their waffles.

While there may not be another grandiose breakfast on their training schedule anytime in the near future, it was abundantly clear that the swim family enjoyed sharing the breakfast table as much as the eight lanes in Marpi.
