The Whispering Palms School Terns won back-to-back sets over Saipan Community School to take the Private Schools Indoor Volleyball League Junior Varsity championship and Amber Roberts was named as the tournament’s most valuable player.

While the players and coaches voted their team representatives among themselves, Roberts didn’t know she would win the honor until her name was called by league coordinator Scott Norman.

“It feels good. I wasn’t expecting it. I was kind of surprised,” she said.

Roberts played strong on the Oleai Sports Complex hard courts but said she shed plans to transition to the sand courts behind the Pacific Islands Club during the Northern Mariana Islands Volleyball Association’s beach volleyball qualifier for the Pacific Games.

The talented youngster won’t stop there as she still has a bunch of soccer and swimming on her mind, but there is still one more 6-on-6 challenge ahead for the students.

By getting recognized as the league’s MVP, Roberts earned a slot on the all-star team that will challenge the coaches on Tuesday, Nov. 21, at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium. Her teammates were also honored after Whispering Palms School was awarded the championship trophy as Zelena Palijo of Calvary Christian Academy, Hunter Thorpe of Whispering Palms School, Mount Carmel’s Joshua Roberto, towering Melvin Kim of Saipan Community School, Savana Mangloña of Marianas Baptist Academy, Seventh Day Adventist’s Kono Remelik, Brandon Chargulaf of Grace Christian Academy, and Gecko Jellian Majors of Saipan International School received individual trophies.
