NMC librarian bids adieu
With a heavy heart, librarian Raquel S. Sablan is leaving Northern Marianas College where she has worked the past 15 years.
Sablan is moving to Florida next month to be with her eldest, 22-year-old Camille, who is now raising a daughter of her own in Tampa. Joining them are her husband Gregorio, a retired employee at Public School System, and their two other children Charles, 20, and Felicia, 10.
The decision is a tough one, but a sacrifice worth taking for the sake of family, Sablan says.
“I didn’t want to leave. I really like it here. I am comfortable and I like my job. But family is a priority,” she relates.
Sablan vows to come back and retire on Saipan, which has been her home for over 20 years. “Our hearts will always be on Saipan,” she says.
Hailing from Cavite, the Philippines, Sablan came to Saipan in 1983. She worked for hotels for a few years before she landed a job as a clerk at the NMC bookstore in 1991. She has been with the college since. She held different positions until she finally got her job as administrative manager at NMC’s Olympio Borja T. Memorial Library, which she has worked since 2001.
She also obtained two associate degrees—office technology and computer science—from the college. She graduated in 2003 after seven years of doing a juggling act: pursuing higher education, working full time, doing part-time volunteer work, and spending time with family.
