Using an extinguisher, a businessman put out a fire that broke out in one of the apartments at the Joeten building in Chalan Piao on Halloween night.

Department of Public Safety acting spokesman Sgt. Thomas A. Blas Jr. yesterday said no one was hurt in the blaze that was reported to DPS at 10:17pm.

Blas said Fire investigator Daniel Suel established that the cause of the fire was faulty electrical wirings by a stove in the room.

Investigation showed that businessman Ernest Strange was alerted by one of his employees about the fire that was coming out of room no. 306A.

Strange took a fire extinguisher and entered the room where he then found the stove engulfed in flames. Strange extinguished the fire then called the Fire Division.

When firefighters arrived, the fire was already gone. The room’s walls and ceiling where the stove was located sustained smoke damage.

Saipan Tribune learned that a structure fire also happened on Saipan Monday night. Blas said he will release today details about the incident.

On Oct. 4, 2006, an unattended lighted candle reportedly caused a fire at a tinhouse in Chalan Kanoa. The fire burned a Virgin Mary statue and part of the house’s ceiling and wall. The incident happened a day before a proclamation signing declaring October as Fire Prevention Month.

According to Fire Division acting Fire director Capt. John Pua, many home fires that occur in the CNMI are triggered by unattended cooking.
