The driver of a vehicle that ran off the roadway and fell into a ravine along the Thousand Curve in Sadog Tasi on Tuesday early morning was arrested after she was found to be under the influence of alcohol.

Maeng Ok, 31, a Korean, was arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol, reckless driving, and refusal to submit to a breath test, according to police yesterday.

Department of Public Safety acting spokesman Sgt. Thomas A. Blas Jr. said that, after receiving a report about the accident, a traffic DUI enforcement officer was dispatched to the scene on Wednesday at 1:12am.

Investigation conducted by Traffic Officer Joseph Magofna showed that a white Toyota Rav4 with license plate ACD-483 being driven by Ok ran off the roadway and crashed into a ditch on the shoulder of the southbound lanes.

Magofna found Ok behind the vehicle in the ditch. Medics were summoned to the scene after the victim complained of body pain.

Ok was brought to the Commonwealth Health Center where she was treated and later released to the custody of Magofna.

Blas said further investigation indicated that the intoxicated Ok was heading north to Tanapag, but that she did not recall crashing into the ravine.

“There were no other vehicles or occupants involved in this crash,” Blas said.

On Oct. 5, 2006 a car ran off the roadway and crashed into the same ravine, which is close to the same spot where Superior Court Associate Judge Kenneth Govendo’s son died last year.

When the police officers responded to the place they saw the vehicle, but nobody was inside or in the vicinity. DPS has yet to release an update of their investigation in that incident.

Ben Govendo, son of Judge Kenneth Govendo, died after the sports utility vehicle he was driving fell into the ravine before dawn of Oct. 1, 2005.

The site is known as Fatality Curve due to the high number of fatalities from vehicular mishaps that had happened in the area.
