‘Animal shelter project will take another year’
Stray dogs and cats on Saipan would have to wait a little longer before they can be sheltered in their new home in As Perdido.
Saipan Mayor Juan B. Tudela said his office would more likely see the completion of the renovation next year. Even though the money would be released by the Department of Finance soon, he said the process of selecting bids for the renovation would take at least 30 days.
Although the budget for the project has been reduced to $75,000, Tudela said he is just thankful that the Legislature finally approved the funding. The mayor was expecting some $100,000.
Saipan Local Law 15-12 has allocated a $250,000 budget for the Saipan Mayor’s Office. Of that amount, $75,000 is set aside for the repairs and renovation of the dog pound.
Of the remaining amount, $75,000 will be used for operations and heavy equipment rentals, heavy equipment parts, and disposal of used oil, while $100,000 will be used to buy new heavy equipment.
Tudela said he would be communicating with Finance for the remittance of this fund to his office.
In July this year, the Saipan Mayor’s Office signed a memorandum of agreement with the Department of Lands and Natural Resources for the transfer of the DLNR Agricultural Station in As Perdido to the Mayor’s Office. The program will use the 20-feet by 45-feet facility to keep stray dogs.
