Local athletes who constantly search for the next challenge needn’t look far beyond Saipan, Tinian, and Rota shores as the CNMI’s closest neighbor has plenty to offer next month when Guam hosts a pair of races on the same day.

While Sundays are usually reserved for family and friends to get together, Saturday, Dec. 2, will go down as a celebration of perspiration as former Olympian Dan O’Keefe and the Guam Triathlon Federation provide a weekend workout worthy of a trip down south.

For the second year in a row, Olympic swimmer O’Keefe will host the Dan’s Cup Winter Loop Ocean Swim at Ypao Beach in Tumon. There will be events for almost every skill level as swimmers can test the waters in the 3,200-meter, 1,600-m, 800-m, or 3×200 m relay events.

The long distance race starts at the crack of dawn when the 3,200 m challenge begins bright and early at 6:30am. The cost to participate in the swim is $20 and those can register online at www.aquaticsguam.com or by contacting O’Keefe at dok54@netpci.com.

The swim will be a good warm-up for the CNMI’s longest aquatic event the following weekend when the Saipan Swim Club hosts the 2nd Annual Eagle Ray 7-km swim from the shores of Pau Pau Beach to Managaha.

Those looking for a double dose of lactic acid build-up should pack their bikes and running shoes as the Guam Triathlon Federation will hold its second Pacific Games qualifier races at the USO in Piti later that day.

The Olympic-distance race features a 1,500-m swim, 40-km bike, and 10-km run under the sun and Northern Mariana Islands Triathlon Federation members will enjoy the same $5 registration fee that is provided to the GTF’s members and students ages 17 and under.

Registration begins at 2pm and the race gets started promptly at 3pm, but GTF president Eric Tydingco recommends pre-registration to avoid the $20 for race day registration fee.

For more information about the GTF race contact Tydingco via email at www.triathlonguam.com.
