Triathletes ready for weekend challenge
The Nissan XTERRA World Championships put a cap on another successful season of off-road triathlon’s premier series, but local multi-sport mavens are anything but finished racing as the Northern Mariana Islands Triathlon Federation Enticer Series continues this weekend.
With just about two weeks until the first major three-stage event in the CNMI, homegrown adrenaline junkies have print and double sprint races this weekend to prepare them for the Rota Blue Triathlon later this month.
According to NMITF secretary and race director Sue Knecht, this Saturday’s slate features a 600-meter, 18-kilometer bike, and 4-km run course as well as a 1,200-m swim, 36-km bike, and 8-km run.
Those competing in the Rota Blue Tri will also have their choice of distances as the southernmost link in the Marianas chain offers a 1,500-m swim, 40-km bike, and 10-km run Olympic-distance race and a will-testing Half Ironman distance race equipped with a 2-km swim, 90-km bike, and 21.1-km half-marathon.
Swimmers take the plunge at 7am for the start and registration for this Saturday’s race gets started at 6:30am at the Pau Pau Beach parking lot. As with the previous races, all participants are automatically entered into February’s drawing to win the Pacific Islands Club prize package and $150.00 cash prize.
“You are entered each time you race in an enticer or sprint this season. The more races you do, the more chances to win. Bring a newbie to do the race and NMITF will enter your name and the newbie in a special prize drawing for the Nov. 4 race,” said Knecht.
As always, teams are encouraged to participate in this weekend’s event and NMITF members will be happy to help put individuals together.
While Knecht has experience hosting the races she cannot do it alone and is looking for volunteers to assist with timing, body marking, registration, setting road cones, the water stops, and traffic control at key points along the course.
Individuals and teams interested in participating in this weekend’s race or volunteering are advised to provide Knecht with names and distances via email at sueknecht1@yahoo.com or by calling 287-9193.
