HONOLULU, Hawaii—Retired U. S. Army Chief of Staff General Eric K. Shinseki has been named to the board of directors of First Hawaiian Bank.

Shinseki retired from the U.S. Army in August 2003 after a distinguished 38-year military career capped by four years (1999-2003) as Chief of Staff, the top uniformed position in the Army. Born on the island of Kauai, he is the first person of Asian ancestry to lead one of the American military services.

“We are appreciative and proud to add General Shinseki to our family. He is a man of demonstrated leadership and integrity,” said FHB president and CEO Don Horner, “…a true ‘keiki o ka`a¯ina’ and testimony to what one can accomplish through hard work and a commitment to excellence.”

Shinseki graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and holds a master’s degree in English Literature from Duke University.

During his Army career, he led troops in combat in Vietnam, where he was wounded twice and had to appeal to remain in the service. He went on to serve in command and staff positions worldwide, leading major commands in Europe and commanding the peacekeeping force in Bosnia.

He has received numerous honors and decorations for his leadership and courage including the Purple Heart, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star and U.S. Distinguished Service Medal.

First Hawaiian Bank ($11.8 billion assets) was founded in 1858 and is Hawaii’s oldest and largest bank. It has 57 branches in Hawaii, three on Guam and two on Saipan. It is a subsidiary of BancWest Corp. (www.bancwestcorp.com), a financial holding company with assets of $66.7 billion. [I](PR)
