All roads lead to cemeteries today as thousands of community members in the CNMI will throng the gravesites of their loved ones, despite Nov. 1 being a regular working day.

Saipan Mayor Juan B. Tudela held a last-minute check on the major cemeteries on the island yesterday.

“I sent my staff for a last inspection and cleanup of the cemeteries in Tanapag, Chalan Kanoa, and Capital Hill,” he said.

Tudela said his office did some cleanup such as bush cutting and road repairs to major thoroughfares within the cemeteries. Staff of the Saipan Mayor’s Office went to the cemeteries since last week bush cutting and uprooting overgrown weeds and vegetation and picking up trash left on gravesites.

He said his office is collaborating with the Department of Public Safety to make sure that peace and order is maintained during the annual celebration.

“Police will be deployed to ensure traffic is safe for everyone,” Tudela said.

At the Chalan Kanoa cemetery, a memorial service will take place in the afternoon. The Mass is dedicated to the souls of the departed.

Tudela, together with his family, will be visiting the Chalan Kanoa cemetery. He said his parents, Jesus and Anunsacion, were laid to rest at the site. He said he would also be visiting four of his eight siblings that are also interred at the Chalan Kanoa cemetery.

Tudela said that community members should cooperate today in any changes in road routes or slower traffic going to the cemeteries.
