CUC still evaluating power proposals
The Commonwealth Utilities Corp. is still evaluating the proposals of three bidders to provide CUC an additional 10 megawatts of energy.
This was disclosed yesterday by CUC executive director Anthony C. Guerrero, who also revealed that they are also assessing whether to push through with the project or not.
Guerrero, in an interview with Saipan Tribune, said they received three competitive bids—one from Malaysia, one from Singapore, and one from the United States.
“We are looking at some of the conditions that they requested. We are looking at that…sharing it also with the committee that we put together,” he said.
Guerrero said the request for proposal is for the emergency 10-megawatt power that they are anticipating to put up as a backup for CUC’s power plants.
“But right now, we are also re-assessing and re-evaluating the need for that backup,” he said.
Guerrero said there is a possibility that they will not push through with it.
“We are still evaluating and looking at the numbers and the bids that we received,” he said.
At the same time, he said, CUC will be submitting more clarifications and questions to the bidders to allow them to make a better decision whether they are going to go forward or not.
“But again we are continuing the evaluation of the proposals received and we are also looking at assessing the need for it,” he pointed out.
CUC was supposed to make the selection among the three bidders last Oct. 24.
CUC lifted the rotating blackouts on the island starting Monday. The utility agency started the rolling outages last July due to limited fuel and power produced at the power plants.
