Tourist drowns on Managaha
A tourist drowned while swimming with other tourists on Managaha Island Monday afternoon.
Yan Lu, 36, a Chinese female, was pronounced dead at 2:25pm by a doctor at the Commonwealth Health Center, according to the Department of Public Safety yesterday.
DPS acting spokesman Sgt. Thomas Blas Jr. said preliminary investigation conducted by Boating Safety officer Roy Roger Kaipat showed that Lu and other companions were swimming at the northern side of Managaha Island, which is outside the designated swimming zone.
Li was later seen motionless and floating in the water. Her companions immediately brought her ashore.
Japanese tourist Makamoto Suzuki assisted lifeguard Larry Williams in applying CPR on the victim but she remained unresponsive.
The victim was brought aboard a Tasi Tours vessel for evacuation. Upon arrival at the Smiling Cove, the vessel and crew were met by medics who transported the victim to CHC.
“This is an ongoing case and Boating Safety Section is still conducting an investigation in this incident,” Blas said.
Meanwhile, a lifeguard saved an eight-year-old girl from drowning in the swimming pool of the Saipan World Resort in Susupe Saturday afternoon.
Blas said investigation showed that the girl was with family members in the pool at the “Wave Jungle” area.
Frank Yoshida, the lifeguard assigned to the “Catch Bowl” area, noticed the motionless girl at the bottom of the pool.
Yoshida immediately pulled the girl out of the water and brought her to the poolside.
The girl was unresponsive but had a pulse. Yoshida continuously applied rescue breathing while waiting for medics to arrive. Yoshida managed to revive the girl before medics came.
The girl was taken to CHC where she was treated and later released, police said.
Li is the seventh drowning victim in the CNMI so far this year.
