Office on Aging gets emergency training
At least nine employees of the Office on Aging took advantage of the austerity Friday to learn more about disaster preparedness.
Last Friday, Aging Center director Howard Macaranas led his staff to the American Red Cross-NMI Chapter office along Airport Road for a whole day of certification training for First Aid Emergency. Macaranas said he had to make the Friday holiday a training day for them in order to better equip his staff on how to respond to disasters and emergencies.
Macaranas said it is important that all government employees should undergo certification training like what they did to meet the standards in better serving the community.
“This way our government employees would earn more respect and recognition from the public,” he said.
He said his staff had been very cooperative. Even though it was austerity Friday for the office, they agreed to take the certification training.
“They are not paid but were very willing to attend the training,” he said.
Office on Aging shouldered the minimal fee that the Red Cross required for the certification training, which was facilitated by Red Cross Health and Safety instructor Glenn Policare.
All Office on Aging drivers were required to attend the training. Macaranas said, “It’s a requirement for safety of transportation.”
The Office on Aging drivers are responsible in transporting the man’amko from their place of residence to the Aging Center everyday.
The trainees learned several techniques and proper means of addressing emergency situations during the training. They had fun role-playing and analyzing case studies.
Macaranas said the certification training was a first for the Office on Aging. He said he is envisioning attending more certification training for his staff and management so that the community, especially the CNMI man’amko, would greatly benefit from well-trained government employees.
