NMC program gets $1.16M DOE grant
The U.S. Department of Education awarded $1.16 million to the Northern Marianas College Talent Search Program for the next four-year grant cycle from October 2006 to September 2010.
The NMC-Talent Search Program is funded to serve economically disadvantaged and first-generation college students between the ages of 11 to 27 years old with academic potential to enroll into college. The major objective of Talent Search is to provide educational support and resources including college admission/financial aid assistance, tutoring, academic/personal/career counseling, and other academic enrichment activities that lead to participant’s successful enrollment into postsecondary institution.
The Talent Search Program provides workshops to eligible participants on local and federal financial aid opportunities, college admission requirements, study skills, College preparation, career opportunities and exploration, study/note-taking skills, library skills, time/stress management skills, and other educational topics on each NMC educational sites. In addition, workshops for parents of project participants are offered each semester that focus on how parents can assist their children in obtaining educational and career goals.
Tutors are assigned to the CNMI Public school system to provide assistance in language arts, mathematics, social science, computer skills, and other academic subjects. Talent Search campus centers provides additional tutorial opportunities and expanded lab hours that assists students with their educational needs to eligible participants, Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., and on Saturdays 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at all NMC Educational Talent Search sites on Saipan, Tinian and Rota.
