A Japanese tourist was injured after he was hit by a car as he was crossing the road in Garapan Monday.

The pedestrian, Nobutoshi Yamanaka, 42, suffered lacerations on the right ear and abrasions on the face. He was treated at the Commonwealth Health Center and later released.

Yamanaka was found at fault for his failure to yield to an oncoming vehicle, according to Department of Public Safety acting spokesman Sgt. Thomas A. Blas Jr yesterday.

Blas said the driver, Naotsugu Suzuki, 42, was not given a traffic citation.

Blas said investigation conducted by the Traffic Investigation Unit revealed that a red 1996 Mitsubishi Eclipse being driven by Suzuki was traveling east by Mom’s Round Two.

The car struck Yamanaka, who was standing on the east- bound lane.

Blas said that Zuzuki stated that he did not see the pedestrian on the road until the last moment.

Zuzuki said he attempted to avoid the pedestrian by steering to the left, but he still hit him with the vehicle’s right side view mirror.

Blas said Yamanaka was thrown to the ground and sustained injuries to his face when he struck the curb along the road.

Yamanaka at the time was walking with a companion. He stepped out onto the eastbound lane and did not notice the oncoming car.

Medics responded to the scene and transported the pedestrian to CHC.
