Some lawmakers want the NMI Retirement Fund building to be renamed in honor of the late Gov. Lorenzo I. Deleon Guerrero, who was laid to rest last Friday.

Rep. Ray Yumul and five other representatives have authored House Bill 15-190, seeking to rename the NMIRF building as “Governor Lorenzo I. Deleon Guerrero Retirement Fund Building.”

The former governor, who died at age 71 two weeks ago, was instrumental in the establishment of the NMI Retirement Fund, as well as the construction of its building on Capital Hill.

The bill would mandate the governor and the Fund officials, in consultation with Deleon Guerrero’s family, to prepare a dedication ceremony. The measure would also allow the governor to reprogram $5,000 from the general fund for the renaming.

Deleon Guerrero spent 20 years of his life in government service. He was elected senator in the Fourth and Fifth NMI Legislature in 1972 and 1976.

In 1978, he was again elected senator and became the first Senate president of the Commonwealth Legislature.

He served as delegate and president of the First Marianas Constitutional Convention in 1976, and delegate and chairman of the Committee on Finance and Other Matters at the Second Constitutional Convention in 1984.

In 1990, Deleon Guerrero was elected as the CNMI’s third governor.

He passed away on Oct. 6, 2006 and was laid to rest in a state funeral attended by hundreds of government officials, relatives, and community members on Friday.
