Despite the scorching heat, family and friends gathered at the American Memorial Park Amphitheatre for Kagman High School graduation ceremony Saturday afternoon.

Alvie Sanchez topped the 186 graduates after being named valedictorian. Twenty juniors were also presented with the Commendation Award for their academic excellence and achievement for completing all course and credit requirements to graduate early.

In her message, principal Doreen Tudela reminded the graduates of the challenges they have accomplished.

“Remember your first few weeks of school? You [all] were probably very excited and a little nervous and scared…thinking of the mountain that lay ahead of you. Now here you are at the top of that mountain…take advantage of the opportunities available.”

“We must be our own heroes,” she added. “Know and trust yourself, and happiness will be yours. Have courage to do those things which brings you happiness and fulfillment and the world will be enriched by your strength and commitment.”

Other graduates, received the Board of Education Award, Commissioner’s Award, Principal’s Award, Parents Teachers Students Association Award, Outstanding Female Graduate Award, Community Service Volunteer Award, and Subject Awards.

Aside from the awards, graduates were presented the Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship and the Joeten Scholarship.
