The Liberation Month celebrations kicked off Friday night with the presentation of four of the six candidates for the 2006 Liberation Day Queen and a spectacular display of fireworks at the Fishing Base in Garapan.

Emcees Reina Camacho and Laila Younis-Boyer called to the stage this year’s candidates for Liberation Day Queen—Ann Margaret Cruz, Celing Lailany Castro, Sorene Aldan Maratita, and Emelaine Fejeran.

The four candidates introduced themselves and briefly explained why they joined the contest. Two other candidates failed to attend the presentation because of graduation activities.

After the candidates showed their modeling skills, the emcees then presented 2005 Liberation Royal Court Queen Yvonne Passi, 2005 Liberation Royal Court Princess Nicole Robert, and 2006 Miss Marianas Teen Myana Welch.

Acting Gov. Timothy P. Villagomez, Saipan Mayor Juan Borja Tudela, and Liberation Day Committee overall chair Tony Cabrera thanked the people, agencies, and organizations that worked hard for the festivities. The three also led the committee members in the countdown for the opening of the festivities. The fireworks display was supposed to start after the countdown, but it came late by a few minutes.

There are 50 booths selling food and beverages, candies, toys, and other products, plus the recycling center put up by the Beautification Group.

For the kids, there are a lot of entertainment rides such as big and mini Ferris wheels, caterpillar, train, super twister, big truck, octopus, sizzler, wall climbing, Ninja jump, merry go round, airplane, spider, scrambler, tubs of fun, and super express.

For those who would like to try their luck, there are huge booths for Massive Bingo and Las Vegas night. At the main entrance, the Department of Public Safety put up a booth where police officers and medics are stationed to respond to any emergency and to maintain peace and order.
