The federal court sentenced yesterday to four years and six months a man convicted of conspiracy to distribute 50 grams or more of methamphetamine or “ice.”

U.S. District Court for the NMI Chief Judge Alex R. Munson ordered 30-year-old Francisco Nakatsukasa Basa to spend 54 months in prison.

Munson said that, while in prison, Basa shall undergo 500 hours of drug rehabilitation and vocational programs as approved by the Bureau of Prisons.

After serving the jail term, the defendant will be placed on five years of supervised release.

During the probation, Basa will be required to perform, among other conditions, 300 hours of community work service.

Munson ordered the defendant to pay $100 in court special assessment fee.

Following the plea agreement, Munson dismissed the other count in the indictment charging Basa with possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance.

According to the indictment, Basa was involved in a conspiracy to distribute 50 grams or more of “ice” between March 2005 and Oct. 20, 2005.

Citing the defendant’s substantial assistance to drug investigation, Assistant U.S. attorney Jamie Bowers recommended an imprisonment of 54 months. (Ferdie de la Torre)
